On arrival at Shenyang airport, transfer to Shenyang train station for your onward high-speed train journey to Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang, China’s northernmost province.
Harbin’s rich Russian architecture and beautiful snow sceneries draw visitors worldwide. The yearly Harbin Ice and Snow Festival features amazing collections of ice and snow artworks including building sculptures – a truly magical experience just being there! The Sun Island Park is famed for its year-long ice sculptures. The famous Siberian Tiger Park, one of the largest tiger reserves in the world and home to over 800 Siberian tigers, is a great place to learn about these beautiful and rare creatures and their natural habitat.
Visit the stunning medieval Volga Manor, a Russian-themed country park featuring some 30 Russian-style buildings, landscaped gardens, wet lands and rivers and bridges and be transported to a fairy-tale world. There is even a Vodka Museum to sample some of the different varieties of Russian vodka! Return to Harbin city and explore the popular Zhongyang pedestrian street, the green-domed St Sophia’s Cathedral, Zhaolin Park and the popular huge underground shopping mall at your own leisure.
Transfer to Harbin train station and board a high-speed train to Jilin City, the second largest city in northeast China bordering Russia and North Korea. Overnight at either Jilin City or Hantun Village, the latter being in close proximity to Wusong Island, famed for its highly picturesque rime – white and frosty – scenery. If overnight stay is at Hantun Village, not to be missed is the sunset views of Wusong Island.
In the early morning, stroll across to Wusong Island to enjoy its beautiful rime landscape and scenery. With the flora – trees and weeping willows – along the Songhua River spectacularly covered with rime, Wusong Island ranks as one of the “Four Natural Wonders in China” (the other 3 being the Guilin landscape, the Yunnan Stone Forest and the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River). Continue on to the beautiful and historic city of Dunhua located in the heart of the Changbai – “always white” – Mountains, a top-rated national scenic tourist destination renowned for its awesome landscapes and resort attractions like hot springs and snow-based activities.
In the morning, visit the beautiful Jingpo Lake, the largest alpine lake in China and the second largest in the world, which was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2006. At the northern end of the Jingpo Lake is the spectacular Jingpo Ice Waterfall (Diaoshuilou) with a width of 40m and a drop of more than 20m, the former rendering it the widest waterfall in Asia. In the afternoon, depart Dunhua and travel to the Changbai Mountains (Changbaishan) at the border of China and North Korea.
Enjoy a scenic tour of the Changbai Mountain Range today. The stunning Changbai Ice Waterfall is a 68m tall alpine waterfall draining the supposed sacred water of Heaven Lake near the summit of Changbaishan, the tallest summit of the Changbai Mountain Range. As a waterfall originating from a volcanic crater lake, it is the largest waterfall in the world according to the Guinness World Records. Other highlights include (1) the Green Deep Pool renowned for its clear green water and therefore its reputation as the “Little Jiuzhai of the Northeast”, and (2) the beautiful and fairyland-like landscape and lush flora of the Valley Floor Forest.
In the morning, enjoy a short walk in the Valley Floor Forest taking in not only the beautiful sights but also its richly-oxygenated air. You may also wish to engage in river rafting on the Lushui River and enjoy not only the rafting experience but also the beautiful rime-scenery on both sides of the river. In the afternoon, proceed on to Shenyang, the largest city and capital of Liaoning Province in northeast China and a former capital of the Manchurians in the 17th century.
Enjoy a guided tour of Shenyang and the key attractions include the Zhongshan Square (dominated by a huge statue of Mao Zedong), Zhongshan Park, Shenyang Zhongjie (historic pedestrian street), the Shenyang Imperial Palace (home to Qing Dynasty emperors) and the Shenyang Railway Station (one of the oldest railway stations in China which was built by the Japanese in 1906).
Free time until your transfer to Shenyang airport for your departure flight.
