Experience the desert by riding a camel, or ride across the dunes in an off-road vehicle, or try sand-sliding, or simply walk among the vast dunes and enjoy the dramatic landscape. Day 05 – HOHHOT – HAILAR [B] Enjoy a visit to the Hulunbuir Ancient City, a reconstructed cultural and historic area in the heart of Hailar with Qing Dynasty frontier city traditional architecture. Wander through its traditional streets and buildings, browse local shops and handicraft stores and experience the atmosphere of Inner Mongolia through its food, architecture and cultural displays. Day 06 – HAILAR – HEISHANTOU [B] Next, visit the Erguna Wetlands, one of the region’s most important natural landscapes where rivers, marshes, grasslands and forested hills come together to create a rich habitat for wildlife and migratory birds. Boardwalks and viewpoints provide sweeping views across the wetlands and surrounding countryside. End the day at Heishantou, a quiet border town (China-Russia) famous for its stunning sunsets and authentic prairie experiences, serving as an excellent base to experience the nomadic lifestyle. Day 07 – HEISHANTOU – MANZHOULI [B] Day 08 – MANZHOULI [B] Continue to Beihu (North Lake) Park, Manzhouli’s premier spot for soaking in the city’s famous night views. Beihu Park is an urban park centred around North Lake, best known for its night scenery, seasonal beauty and recreational activities like boating in summer and skating in winter. Matryoshka Square (Taowa Square) is Manzhouli’s most famous landmark featuring a giant 30m tall Matryoshka doll (a Guinness World Record) surrounded by hundreds of colourful nesting dolls reflecting Manzhouli’s strong Russian cultural influence. The square is part of a larger themed area and the entire complex looks especially magical at night when lit up. Sino-Russian Pedestrian Street (Sino-Soviet Golden Street), in the heart of the city is a lively pedestrian-friendly street where parts of the streetscape retain the atmosphere of the 1901 railway era with Russian-style domes, European architecture, Russian shops, cafes and local restaurants – perfect for strolling, people-watching, finding unique Russian souvenirs, sampling Russian-influenced treats and soaking in the exotic atmosphere. Day 09 – MANZHOULI – ARXAN [B] Begin the day with a visit to Hulun Lake, one of China’s largest freshwater lakes and the largest lake in Inner Mongolia. Surrounded by vast grasslands and open skies, the lake offers a chance to appreciate the scale and beauty of the northern Inner Mongolian landscape. Continue on to Wuli Springs, renowned for its mineral-rich water and as a popular source of natural drinking water for locals and visitors alike too. Travel towards Arxan, journeying through increasingly forested and mountainous landscapes as the scenery changes from open steppes to the Greater Khingan Range. Arxan is a picturesque mountain town renowned for its forests, volcanic landscapes, hot springs and pristine natural scenery. Upon arrival, visit the historic Arxan Railway Station, a charming early 20th century station built in a distinctive European style and certainly one of the town’s best known landmarks. Go on a spectacular journey through some of Inner Mongolia’s most distinctive landscapes. Begin with the remarkable Wulan Hada Volcano Geopark, where striking volcanic cones, black lava formations and vast grasslands create an otherworldly setting. Continue on to the expansive Huiteng Xile Grassland, a beautiful highland meadow known for endless rolling grasslands, wildflowers, traditional Mongolian yurts, grazing animals, horseback riding and traditional grassland culture. It ranks among the top 3 largest best-preserved alpine meadows in the world. End the day at Huanghuagou (“Yellow Flower Valley”), where the open steppe gives way to dramatic valleys, unusual rock formations and scenic trails.
Today’s highlight is the Huanghuagou Geopark Scenic Area, a scenic valley within the Huiteng Xile Grassland of Inner Mongolia known for its vast highland grasslands, dramatic valleys, unusual rock formations and wide-open mountain scenery. Stroll along the wooden boardwalks leading into the valley and be greeted by dramatic rock formations, cliffs, streams and unusual geological features surrounded by alpine meadow.
Begin the day with a visit to the massive, high-tech industrial mega-project in Hohhot dubbed the “Dairy Silicon Valley” of the world. The valley operates as a fully automated data-driven production ecosystem with unmatched manufacturing scale and end-to-end digital integration “from grass to finished dairy products”.
Board a domestic flight to Hailar, the gateway to Hulunbuir in northeastern Inner Mongolia known for its enormous open grasslands larger than the UK in size and stretching towards Mongolia and Russia. Before venturing into the open grasslands of Hulunbuir in the coming days, visit the Hailar National Forest Park, a unique natural reserve just 2km west of Hailar city featuring Mongolian Scotch pine forests, grasslands, wetlands and historical relics offering a contrast to the vast grasslands further out. Within the Hailar National Forest Park, enjoy the changing scenery as you leisurely explore the park.
Head out to enjoy the spectacular landscapes of Hulunbuir beginning with the impressive Morigele River Scenic Area (5A national rating), renowned for its winding, ribbon-like river flowing through vast rolling grasslands. From the elevated viewpoints, the river curves dramatically across the green steppes, creating one of Hulunbuir’s most iconic landscapes and an excellent setting for photography. Continue on to the 186 Coloured Ribbon River where the river and surrounding wetlands create a beautiful mosaic of waterways, grasslands and seasonal colours. The area is particularly scenic outside of winter and offers opportunities to appreciate the peaceful and untouched character of Hulunbuir countryside.
Depart Heishantou and continue to enjoy the Hulunbuir Grassland. The scenic beauty of the Hulunbuir Grassland lies in its sheer immensity, dynamic seasonal palette, diversity of landscapes and the seamless unspoilt harmony between its wild ecosystems and pastoral life. Spend the day photographing the grasslands, meet local herders and experience elements of Mongolian culture and cuisine. In the late afternoon, head towards Manzhouli, a fascinating border city and also China’s largest land-port city, that is renowned for its distinctive blend of Chinese, Mongolian and Russian influences. Explore the city’s striking architecture, lively streets and illuminated landmarks and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this important trading gateway between China and Russia. It is especially attractive after dusk.
Spend the day discovering some of Manzhouli’s top attractions. The Manzhouli Guomen Scenic Area is the city’s iconic China–Russia border landmark whose attractions include the massive Border Gate, the Observation Deck and historical monuments. Experience also the vibrant atmosphere of this important border crossing.
Arxan National Forest Park is a massive volcanic UNESCO Global Geopark celebrated for its dense volcanic landforms, pristine crater lakes, endless larch and birch forests, lava fields and year-round thermal and cold mineral springs. It is one of China’s most scenic and least crowded nature destinations, offering year-round beauty from wild azalea blooms in spring to golden birch forests in autumn and snowy wonderlands in winter. Major highlights include: Tianchi (Heavenly Lake), a high altitude volcanic crater lake at about 1,332m elevation and surrounded by larch and birch forests; Shitanglin (Stone Pond Forest), an extensive solidified basalt/lava forest where trees grow directly through volcanic rock; Dujuan Lake (Azalea Lake), a particularly attractive lake when the surrounding azaleas are blooming; Santan Gorge (Three Ponds Gorge), a forested gorge with several connected pools and streams; Unfrozen River, where geothermal activity keeps part of the river flowing even during severe winter.
