11D10N Nordic Northern Lights Discovery in Norway Sweden and Finland

Day 01 – ARRIVE OSLO – TROMSO
On arrival at Oslo Gardermoen International Airport in Oslo, take a relatively short flight to Tromso, a beautiful Norwegian city above the Arctic Circle renowned for its beautiful natural scenery and also as a choice location to see the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis.  Your driver will pick you up at the Tromso Airport and fetch you to your hotel.

Day 02 – TROMSO   [B]
In the day, go on a guided cruise tour to the stunning fjords around Tromso and enjoy the beautiful coastal views and the arctic scenery and wildlife.  In the evening, join a Northern Lights Adventure Tour to catch the Northern Lights.  The Northern Lights are one of nature’s most beautiful displays – often described as the greatest natural light show on earth! – and Tromso, located over 300 km north of the Arctic Circle in Norway, ranks among the best places in the world to witness this awesome phenomenon.

Day 03 – TROMSO – NARVIK   [B]
In the morning, take a pre-arranged coach trip from Tromso to the charming port-town of Narvik on the Ofotfjord (aka Narvik Fjord) in Norway that is known among others for its dramatic natural landscapes and also for catching the Northern Lights.  In Narvik, enjoy the town at your own leisure.  You may wish to take a cable car ride to the ski resort of Narvikfjellet, the top station of which affords breathtaking views of the surrounding fjords and mountains.  At night, if the sky is clear, you may be able to see the Northern Lights from just outside your hotel!

Day 04 – NARVIK – ABISKO   [B]
Continue to enjoy Narvik at your own leisure in the morning.  In the afternoon, board the famous Arctic Circle Train into Abisko, a small village in the Abisko National Park of the Swedish Lapland.  The rail journey will take you through a few towns set amidst wild and beautiful landscape with breathtaking views of the Ofotfjord (Narvik Fjord), along which Narvik is located.  This train ride ranks highly among the most spectacular train rides in the world.  Abisko is situated some 250km north of the Arctic Circle and fortuitously located in the middle of the Aurora Zone.  The surrounding mountains around Abisko provide it with a micro-climate that affords clear skies on more days than most other places in the Lapland (Swedish, Norwegian or Finnish).  Add to that the fact that it sits within the Aurora Zone, Abisko unsurprisingly offers near-ideal conditions for catching the Northern Lights.  No wonder therefore that the chance of catching the Northern Lights in Abisko has been among the highest in the world at above 80% when the sky is clear.  In the evening, join a “Chase the Northern Lights Tour”.

Day 05 – ABISKO   [B]
Join a tour to appreciate the Swedish Lapland that includes a visit to the world famous IceHotel.  The IceHotel, rebuilt every year from sculptured ice blocks from the nearby Torne River, features about 120 rooms with the “furniture” all sculpted from ice.  There is also a nice bar with glasses made of ice, an ice restaurant and even an ice chapel that is ever popular with couples making their marriage vows!
In the evening, you may wish to join a guided visit to the Aurora Sky Station.  In 2015, Lonely Planet picked Abisko, and in particular the Aurora Sky Station, as the best place in the world to experience the Northern Lights.  The Aurora Sky Station was purpose built for catching the Northern Lights and, at an elevation of 900m above sea level, it offers an ideal vantage point for viewing the Northern Lights. (This is an optional despite its appeal as this excursion may be unsuitable for some travellers).

Day 06 – ABISKO – ROVANIEMI   [B]
Embark on a road trip from Abisko to Rovaniemi, the capital of the Finnish Lapland in the northernmost region of Finland.  Often considered the official hometown of Santa Claus, Rovaniemi, due to its location, serves as a gateway to the Arctic wilderness in Finland and it is as such a popular destination for travellers to Finland seeking to experience the Arctic environment, the Northern Lights and outdoor activities like husky or reindeer sledding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and ice fishing.  Rovaniemi is also a hub for showcasing – at cultural centres and museums – the culture and traditions of the indigenous Sámi people.  Enjoy Rovaniemi at your own leisure for the rest of the day.

Day 07 – ROVANIEMI   [B]
You have a full day to enjoy Rovaniemi at your own leisure. You may wish to head to the highly popular Santa Claus Village. The village is located right on the Arctic Circle and there is a demarcation line painted on the ground running through the village.  Straddle the line and you are one leg in the Arctic Circle and another leg out of it!  Apart from the key highlight of meeting with Santa Claus (at Santa’s Office), other attractions at the village include the ever-busy Santa Claus Post Office, gift shops, reindeer rides, cafes and restaurants. (Details on visiting Santa Claus Village will be provided).

Day 08 – ROVANIEMI – HELSINKI   [B]
Transfer to the airport, and take a flight to Helsinki, the vibrant capital city of Finland.  On arrival in Helsinki, your driver will pick you up at the airport and fetch you to your hotel.  Enjoy Helsinki at your own leisure – the city is compact and pedestrian-friendly, making it easy to explore on foot.  Market Square is a lively spot where locals and tourists mingle and also where you can get to savour Finnish food and delicacies.

Day 09 – HELSINKI   [B]
Board a ferry (ticket included) heading to the nearby Suomenlinna Fort, a historic sea fortress located on a group of islands that has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  While sailing on the ferry, you may be able to witness the ferry breaking ice.  At the fort, enjoy a guided tour.  After the tour and back in the city, join a sightseeing bus tour to see the classic sights of Helsinki, such as the historical city centre, the Senate Square, the City Hall, the Kaivopuisto Park, the Olympic Stadium and also local life outside the city center in the Kallio and Hakaniemi districts.

Day 10 – HELSINKI   [B]
Enjoy Helsinki at your own leisure.  If you wish to explore beyond Helsinki, there is Porvoo, a charming and historic medieval town located on the southern coast of Finland about 50km east of Helsinki that is known for its well-preserved and picturesque Old Town characterized by narrow cobblestone streets and beautiful riverside setting of colourful wooden houses and medieval buildings.  It is also possible to do a daytrip to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia and whose old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 11 – DEPART HELSINKI   [B]
Your driver will pick you at your hotel and send you to the airport for your departure flight back home.
