9D8N Switzerland Grand Train Tour with Glacier Express

Day 01 – ZURICH AIRPORT – LUCERNE

On arrival at Zurich Airport, travel to your hotel in Lucerne.  In Lucerne, visit the Alstadt (old town) with highlights including Chapel Bridge and the Lion Monument.

Day 02 – LUCERNE: MOUNT RIGI & LAKE LUCERNE  [B]

Enjoy a very scenic ride on a mountain railway train to Mount Rigi (1,798m), a mountain massif of the Swiss Alps near Lucerne that is surrounded by 3 lakes – Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz.  From the summit, enjoy the breathtaking view of the Swiss Alps and the Swiss Plateau that stretches to Germany and France.  For a different view and experience, descend Mount Rigi on a different route and enjoy a cruise across Lake Lucerne.

Day 03 – LUCERNE – INTERLAKEN (Lucerne-Interlaken Express)  [B]

Board the Lucerne-Interlaken Express and head to Interlaken.  Interlaken is a resort town that lies in the narrow valley between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and well positioned with easy access to the presiding mountains of Eiger (3,970m), Mönch (4,107m) and Jungfrau (4,158m).  In the afternoon, take the funicular up to Harder Kulm and enjoy the overwhelming views of Interlaken and the peaks of Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau.  Venture further onto the overhanging Zwei-Seen-Steg (‘Two Lakes Bridge’) for even more panoramic views.

Day 04 – INTERLAKEN: MURREN & MOUNT SCHILTHORN  [B]

Visit the car-free alpine village of Murren, a village perched 1,650m up the side of Mount Schilthorn (of James Bond fame – yes, Mr Bond skiing down its slope!) and with a so-close-you-can-touch-it view of the magnificent trio of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau!  Thereafter, ascend to the summit of Schilthorn (2,970m) and visit the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant and enjoy the magnificent 360-degree summit view of the – yet again! – domineering trio of Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau, and in the distance the highest peak in the European Alps – Mont Blanc.

Day 05 – INTERLAKEN – MONTREUX (Golden Pass Express)  [B]

Enjoy the very scenic rail journey today onboard the Golden Pass Express, travelling from Interlaken to Gstaad to Montreux.  Montreux is a beautiful town on the shores of Lake Geneva known for its mild climate, its beautiful scenery, and its vibrant cultural scene.  Enjoy Montreux old town at your own leisure.

Day 06 – MONTREUX – ZERMATT  [B,L]

Enjoy a boat ride to the Chillon Castle, a medieval castle perched on a rocky outcrop on the shores of Lake Geneva and offering stunning views of the surrounding area.  Thereafter, enjoy a lunch cruise on Lake Geneva.
In the afternoon, take a train to Zermatt.  Zermatt, situated at 1,600m above sea level, is a beautiful alpine town at the foot of Switzerland’s iconic mountain Matterhorn (4,478m)

Day 07 – ZERMATT: MOUNT GORNERGRAT  [B]

In the morning, ride the Gornergrat train through forests and meadows up to the summit (3,089m) and enjoy the magnificent view of Matterhorn enroute.  The Gornergrat train is an engineering marvel of the 19th century that made its maiden journey on 20 August 1898 and to-date the Gornergrat train station is Europe’s highest outdoor train station. Back in Zermatt, enjoy the alpine village with its lively scene of boutique shops, restaurants, hotels and a ski centre.

Day 08 – ZERMATT – CHUR (Glacier Express); CHUR – ZURICH  [B]

Ride the Glacier Express from Zermatt to Chur, on one of the world’s most scenic train journeys.  The Glacier Express is known for its panoramic route, which passes through some of the most beautiful and remote parts of the Swiss Alps.  Arriving in Chur, you will see a mix of new and old architecture. Chur is the oldest city in Switzerland, with a settlement history of over 5,000 years.  Thereafter, continue on to Zurich for the night.

Day 08 – ZURICH – ZURICH AIRPORT  [B]

Stroll along the Bahnhofstrasse and perhaps do some shopping, before heading to the airport for your flight home.
